Two and a half years ago I never imagined I’d be writing a post like this. Back then Jeffery was a very out of control little boy. We started him in karate to try to channel his anger and let off some steam and energy. It also give him motivation as he liked it and if he misbehaved he could lose his belt or a stripe and he hated that. He started in a place that their warm up was playing on a huge indoor jungle gym thing…so that was the main reason he wanted to go. Then once we moved to the actual Brian Mayes Karate studio in the city (where we were going was a branch off of the same place) the class always ended with a game, most of the time it was dodge ball and that become his favorite thing about karate.
Two and a half years ago I remember asking his instructor on many occasions to have a chit chat with Jeffery about his behavior. One thing they talked about in karate was RESPECT and Jeffery was having trouble with that…both at home and at school. We started seeing a little difference with him, he was enjoying karate and I enjoyed seeing him work towards his next belt. It also helped that his instructors, Mr. K and Miss Heather were amazing with the kids they taught.
Jeffery’s first round of belts were with a white stripe down the center which were for Little Dragons class, the little kids. Once he got to the end of the brown belt in that class (about a year ago) he was able to move to the family class which does solid colors and that’s when he was officially working towards a black belt. The new class had him doing multiple actions for katas, he seemed to have difficulty with them. He would always be one step behind because he watched everyone else to know what to do next. We kept encouraging him and he managed to get his Orange belt with little difficulty. His Purple, we were told he almost didn’t get it and he needed to work harder to get his Green. He did work a little harder, he managed to get Green with little difficulty.
For those wondering about the black stripe down the middle of his latest belts…that’s shows that he’s in Black Belt Club. He gets an extra 15min of class and learns weapons and sparring.
Within the last few months, we’ve all (Jeff, myself and his instructor) have noticed Jeffery REALLY trying. He has taken a few extra classes during the week and you can see him focusing more. He really is working hard and Friday we saw it pay off. Before leaving for belt promotion Jeff had Jeffery in the yard practicing his 2 katas that he needed to know to get his Blue belt. He knew all the moves no problem, we told him to slow down and make sure he did all the moves correctly.
Belt Test: The first word that comes to my mind is WOW! He did Universal 1 with no problems and one of his fellow classmates chose him to do it with him as a “wing man”. After his group did Star Form, Mr K asked Jeffery to stay up there. Watch the video below to see how awesome he was (listen carefully and you can hear Mr. K tell him what he needs to do)
Jeffery passed his test and EARNED his Blue belt! I couldn’t have been prouder to watch him receive that belt that day. He’s closer and closer to getting that Black belt and I am sure he’ll keep working until he earns it!
A huge thank you to Brian Mayes Karate for having a wonderful program and wonderful instructors!
On another note…guess who’s starting karate this week. Yep…this Mama right here! They are doing a Mother’s Day special where the uniform and first month are free…if we can afford it I’m going to try to keep doing it past the month because I need something for myself and I’ve watched Jeffery for 2 1/2 years…it looks fun.
