Over the past few months Jeffery has changed a LOT. Yesterday was his belt promotion (mine is Friday…eeek!) he tested to go from Blue to Red. Watching him…his focus, his drive, his attention to detail and to actually see the difference in him as he went through the test…it was surreal. I kept catching him looking over at me to make sure I was watching, his grin…it was obvious he felt confident about how he was doing and I’m sure the pride in my face was obvious as I smiled back at him. He knew this belt test was different because with the higher belt, meant he was moving to a new class. He was going to move from the Intermediate class to the Advanced class. He did it…he passed the test.
As Mr. K (he’s both Jeffery and my instructor) was handing out belts…he called up everyone one at a time and awarded them their new belt and a certificate. When he called Jeffery up he paused and told Jeffery to turn around and face the class and everyone watching. He was then asked to tell everyone what his goal in karate is. Jeffery’s face was priceless:
He then regained his composure and confidence.
He then told everyone “I want to be a karate instructor.” Everyone burst out in applause for him and I swear I felt like my heart was going to come out of my chest with pride. It was awesome. Mr. K said he’s well on his way and none of us have any doubt he’ll reach that goal. Mr. K then awarded Jeffery his red belt!
I’ve never doubted the decision to put him in karate 3 years ago. I keep getting proof over and over that this is one of the best parenting decisions I’ve ever made. It’s not only helping him in there here and now but I can see this helping him for the rest of his life.
Just a flashback…this is Jeffery when he was a Red belt in Little Dragons.
Compare that to the picture above of his fighting stance while he was testing. It’s a huge difference. And per the normal protocol…here is a picture of Jeffery with his new belt and his instructor.
He’s closer to that Black belt!!!!! There are no words to describe how proud I am of him!
