Going Green with Monkey Mayhem

After making the decision to switch to cloth diapers (we’re working on it!) I got to thinking about other ways I could switch to more environmentally friendly. I had reviewed “green” products in the past and they worked just as well if not better than products with chemicals. We actually had to switch Justin’s detergent to the “free and clear” detergent because he breaks out in a horrible rash if we use other detergent.

Once I got to thinking more about switching, I was thinking about my blog…how I can help. The idea come that I blog my switch…to show others that anyone can do it…even someone who never thought about going “green” until they are 27 lol. My kids are in scouts and they teach about the earth and helping the environment…why shouldn’t I switch stuff at home. Now, I don’t expect to do EVERYTHING green right away…this will probably be a work in progress.

So, to jump start this I decided to hold a “Going Green with Monkey Mayhem” event where I do reviews and hopefully some giveaways to help others start being green themselves! So join me starting June 11th as I start posts dedicated to going green! Add the banner below to your site/blog for extra entries into any giveaways posted for the event!

Kalsø Earth Shoes “Project Earth Day Scholarship”

When I first heard about the Kalsø Earth Shoes “Project Earth Day Scholarship” and read what all it was about, I immediately emailed Jaylin’s Girl Scout troop leader to ask if she would be interested in doing a project with the troop if I were to apply and get selected…she thought it was a great idea and we happened to be having a meeting tonight so she wanted to discuss it with the girls (and parents) to see if they would be interested. They were!

This is Jaylin in March 2010 at Big Gem Park...it hasn't changed much but has a lot of potential!

Being that I was in Girl Scouts when I was little, I remember doing things for the community to make it a better place and being a good citizen. I’m thrilled to be able to pass that down to my daughter by having her be a Girl Scout too. When thinking about project ideas, living in a small town the possibilities are endless with $1000! We have a nice park that is slowly being built up called Big Gem Park and my family and myself have volunteered there in the past and love to watch it grow. The girls could plant flowers around the area, make flower beds and tend to flower gardens that have been planted in the past that aren’t being kept up right now. This park is along the major road that goes through town so most people passing through town see this park. This is also the park that the town holds it’s Tree Lighting Ceremony every year as well as Easter Egg hunts, I’ve seen people have weddings there and I know we’ve had at least one birthday party there…it’s a park that is used a lot but needs some extra beauty!

The troop leader also brought up a good suggestion of planting some flowers or doing something special in front of the church that we have meetings in. This church has been the meeting place for Girl Scouts since I was little! It would be nice to give back to them for once!

Shenandoah Daisy Scout Troop :)

I think it’s important to teach the girls at a young age, the importance of keeping the Earth clean and beautiful. That’s why I would love to be selected to get the Kalsø Earth Shoes “Project Earth Day Scholarship” so the Girl Scout troop of Shenandoah, VA can have a great Earth Day celebration by planting flowers, trees, cleaning up trash and making the Earth beautiful, just like they all are! This group of kindergarten and 1st grade girls would love to make their hometown beautiful and do an Earth Day project! Even the parents were excited when we were discussing it! Kalsø Earth Shoes “Project Earth Day Scholarship” would benefit not only my daughter, but her entire Girl Scout Troop as well as the entire town.

Kalsø Earth Shoes is offering a “Project Earth Day Scholarship” to 3 bloggers in the amount of $1000 each to do projects around their community for Earth Day. This post is my entry to be considered for the sponsorship.

Mondays

I think I’m one of the rare people. I don’t mind Mondays! Mondays mean back to schedule to me…my kids don’t sleep in so the weekends aren’t a time for me to sleep in, and Jeff has crazy work schedule he don’t always go back to work on Mondays (although this week he does….but he’s been home for 3 days so I’m ready for him to go back to work lol) Mondays mean a slightly quieter house for a little while…no fighting for a little while…and NAPS!!!! It also means I know what is going to happen next…there are times the kids go to school, get out of school, and after school activities. There are no times for the weekend…yes it’s chill and I don’t have to worry about going anywhere but my kids (and me too) thrive on schedule and knowing what’s going to happen next. When it’s just a free day, it’s hectic, kids screaming, fighting, asking a million questions about when it’s time for lunch, dinner and if they can do this or that (mostly video games that they need to earn their time on) After so long together, the kids can’t wait for Monday either so they can get away from each other and me (since I’d probably told them a million times to stop fighting, to clean up, or whatever else they didn’t want to do lol)

Don’t get me wrong, I love my kids…but they just fight when together for too long on the weekends and we’re ALL ready for school and Mondays!

Mondays also starts my craziness…Just this week: Monday is Girl Scouts, Tuesday Justin and Jaxon have an appointment, Wednesday Justin goes back to the ENT and Jeffery has Boy Scouts, Thursday is Jeffery’s birthday, Justin has a doctor’s appointment, and Jeffery has karate, Friday I don’t think there is anything planned….yet!

What do you like or dislike about Mondays?

#RAZ2011 Random Acts of Zhu – Shenandoah Page One

I was born and raised in Shenandoah, VA…as was my dad and so are my kids. I love where we live and wouldn’t change it for the world. So when I got chosen to be one of the bloggers to participate in Random Acts of Zhu (RAZ) 2011, I knew I wanted to do something within Shenandoah.

Cepia, LLC sent me a LOT of Zhu Zhu product to hand out to a charity of my choice. I was thrilled with the response I got on my personal Facebook page when I mentioned I was looking for someplace to donate the toys (my original idea didn’t work out)…I had posted this picture the day the shipment come in:

I was NOT expecting 96 boxes to arrive...so we just piled them up against the wall (and up to the ceiling) and hoped I would get them donated quickly lol.

A friend of mine, Teresa,  mentioned Page One and that their Christmas party was the following weekend…her husband’s (who is also a friend of the family) mom volunteered at Page One and she would see if they could use them. Within a short amount of time it was a done deal, I would be donating the Zhu-Zhu products to Page One. When I looked at the shipping list, I saw I had enough Zhu-Zhu pets for 24 kids and could give each of those 24 kids 12+ track/accessories!!!! Within an hour or so we (Teresa and another friend on Facebook that I went to high school with, Brittany) were figuring out when (and how) we could take the boxes to the church the party was being held at and how they would be handed out. Teresa said her and her husband could come get them since they have a truck and would help me take them to the church…well Thursday night this is how many there was loading up their truck and van (the boxes filled BOTH the van and truck as full as they would go!)

There was a total of 5 people loading up the boxes, Jeff, Teresa, Kirk (Teresa's husband) and their 2 daughters.

While Jeff stayed here with the kids, I got in my van and went to the church to help organize everything and get it all ready for Saturday. When we arrived, there was people there and they also helped unload the boxes for us…it made it a LOT faster lol.

Theresa and Kirk's daughters (Marina and Buggy) with all the boxes in the church.

Once they were all in the church, they stuck around and helped me open every single one of those boxes and make 24 piles of toys (each one identical with the number of everything) and it wasn’t exactly easy…we ran out of boxes that were big enough…and got mixed up on a few things…but in the end we managed to get 24 evenly packed boxes!

Opening and sorting everything...then breaking down the boxes. This is Teresa, Brittany, Marina and Buggy.

SOME of the packed boxes (we had a total of 24)

Kirk breaking down the boxes at the end (broken down boxes were taken to the recycling center and not just thrown away!)

In the end, this is what each child would get:

This is what **1** child would get!

It includes a Kung Zhu hamster, 3 armor, 2 vehicles, 2 tube track things, and 3 rooms (2 different ones) and a huge battle arena (which is on the bottom in the back and you can’t see lol)

I was so happy to see how everyone come together to get this done, it took the 6 of us a little over an hour to open and organize everything and they were all happy to help!

When Saturday come, I made sure the kids knew we were giving toys to kids who didn’t have as many toys as they do. Jeffery and Jaylin understood and was excited to see other kids and give them toys (even though when the time came, they ended up going to the church’s playroom…they knew why we were there)

This is one of the Page One volunteers, Sue, who helped Brittany and I hand out the toys.

I don’t have words to express how happy it made me to see the kids’ faces when they saw how much they were getting…and the parents not knowing what to say when they were handed a huge box packed full of stuff. After talking to Brittany who had the list of families and the ages of their kids…we agreed to give each family that had a child over the age of 5 one of the boxes and we had just enough for those!

Brittany and Sue giving a box to a little boy (and my Jaxon standing there watching...he has a Blue's Clue on his forehead from the 7-11 grand opening we went to before the party lol)

It was nice to help out 24 families this Christmas season! It’s better to give than to receive and I honestly feel that now…I didn’t realize how good it would feel to give all that out.

Before we finished giving out the toys, they wanted a picture of me with the table that showed what each box contained (I had 3 sets set up on a table as a display) so I guess I could post one of those ;)

The volunteers at Page One thanked me a million times…So I pass that on to Cepia, LLC…Thank you for making the Christmas for 24 Shenandoah families a little bit brighter!

Also, thank you to everyone who helped me when they didn’t have to, Teresa, Kirk, Marina, Buggy, Brittany and Sue. I don’t think I could have done this without them! Oh, and I can’t forget Jeff…when FedEx knocked on my door and told me he had 96 boxes for me, I had to wake Jeff up (he’s on night shift) and he carried all the boxes in, then a few days later he carried them back out to the sidewalk waiting for Kirk and Teresa…then helped put them in the truck and van! This is from a guy who does nothing but lift boxes at work…but he didn’t complain once! <3 Thank you Jeff! Also thank you to everyone who was at the church and helped us unload the boxes and take them in for us.

Give Yourself the Gift of Me Time (Sponsored Post)

As a dedicated wife and mother of three extremely active kids, I often find that my own needs have to take a back seat to whatever my family wishes. I also find it hard to justify spending money pampering myself when beauty treatments can be so expensive and there’s so much else that could be done with the money.

However, I have noticed myself lagging recently after a hard couple of months and my husband suggested I take a weekend break and focus on myself – I could hardly pass up the chance to get some guilt free time to myself and so I started thinking about what I could do with my time away. I considered visiting my mom and dad, but every gal knows that can this can make a holiday more stressful than what we’ve come to get away from! I was looking wistfully at the costs of some pampering days at local spas when I stumbled across Wahanda, which is a god send for us girls, let me tell you!

Wahanda’s mission is to make wellness and beauty available for everyone and to suit every budget and I was amazed by some of their offers. They had everything I could have ever dreamed of and at prices that weren’t going to break the bank, so instead of feeling guilty about spending money on a beauty treatment I worked out that I’d actually be able to buy more than one for the same price I’d usually nervously part with for a single treatment!

I ended up buying a great little spa deal that meant I was able to get away from it all and have some much needed me time. Knowing that it didn’t cost me the earth to treat myself made the experience even more relaxing and now in the future when I need some mommy alone time I won’t feel quite so bad about asking for it!

Giving Your Eldest Their Own Room (Sponsored Post)

It’s a time every mother dreads: your two little angels who had been peacefully sharing a bedroom have suddenly turned into devils bent on one another’s destruction and the bedroom has turned into a battlefield. It’s happened to me and, let me tell you, nothing turns your life upside down quite like warring children! I found there really was no other solution than to give each of them their own space. Making a bedroom for your eldest out of a spare living space is a great way to make them feel independent and to give both children somewhere they can go to get some peace from the other should they need to.

Creating a fun and individual bedroom for my eldest was a breeze – I started out thinking that it was going to be a costly and lengthy exercise, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. How you decorate it will be based on your (and your child’s!) tastes and age, but I found that many home improvement stores now stock wall decals that can be affixed to the bedroom wall and come in all shapes and sizes, from princess themes to popular Toy Story characters. I considered going with these, but was put off by the idea of having to scrape them off the walls before I could paint again and considering how often my kids get bored with things this would be sooner rather than later! I found that the stores also stocked many stencils that allowed me to mix and match and paint individual designs directly onto the walls. By mixing stencils, paint and feature walls, the bedroom gained a personal touch without breaking the bank and when she grows out of it I can change it without much fuss.

My biggest concern after this was making sure that both kids had beds that were suitable to their needs. Previously both shared a bunk bed, with the eldest on the top bunk (of course). Sorting out a bed for my youngest turned out to be simple as he quite happily climbed into the top bunk and claimed it as his own, despite my reservations that he might be too young for the top bunk. My eldest was trickier. With limited storage space I needed something I could store things under, but that was still comfortable and stylish. I decided to go with a simple, sturdy single bed as I didn’t want to have to buy another one any time soon. This turned out to be a perfect choice as there was still plenty of room underneath to store bedding, toys and clothes and a bed skirt covered up the clutter nicely.

From here it was simply adding touches so that everything he needed as he grew rapidly would be there – we bought a lovely little writing desk so that he would have somewhere to do his homework in peace away from the kitchen table and some toy hammocks to store those toys he rarely ever played with but absolutely refused to part with.

As much as my little ones enjoyed sharing a bedroom, they are delighted to have their own space to retreat from battle to and I haven’t had to split up a fight over whose turn it is to clean the room in months!
